David Thoreau aimed to encourage citizens to take action for the repossession of their neglected freedoms and modify basic rights by exposing the corrupt nature of the government. To do so, Thoreau presented a situation he experienced government oppression with it, he reminded citizens that change is possible and people need to take action.

He encourages people to be strong and brave, to fight for freedom.
