Lawrence Murphy was born on 1831 in Wedford, Ireland. He moved to the US and enlisted himself in the 5th Infantry. Later, in 1869, Murphy moved to Lincoln Country and was able to establish the L. G. Murphy&Co in 1874, making his cosoldier, James Dolan, his partner.

Murphy and his partners in business, which later on include another Irish immigrant, John Riley, were disliked by many farmers because of the low prices they gave for their cattle and selling it very expensively.

When two other businessmen, Alexander McSween and John Tunstall, later built a rival company, Dolan goad Tunstall into a fight. Killing of Tunstall by Jesse Evans, Tom Hill, and William Morton later started the known Lincoln Country War.
