Depends in which area because as we know it didn't covered much of Europe, it succeed mostly in areas where clergy had bad reputation and couldn't make catholicsim attractive once again, other reason is fact thta when protestantism was forged also absolutism started it's rise and in protestantism there existed concept that moanrch shlud be head of national chuch cotrary to catholicism where secular and ecclesistical authority should be separated, so it was atractive for those who wanted gain more power
