How did depletion of natural resources lead to the civilizations decline

Lack of resources can lead to a difficulty in building projects and places of work. They can also be harmful for its citizens, having a lack of food can starve its inhabitants and lead to the people leaving. This eventually means abandoning the city, and the civilization falls.
