The treaty mandated punitive war reparations from Germany. The reparations were so demoralizing that it left the German citizenry bitter and resentful. Under the yoke of hardship from things such as the resulting hyperinflation, an opening was created for someone who could ease the burden of the German people, someone like Adolf Hitler.
