He had an extraordinary sense of grandeur and believed himself to be much more than a mere mortal, thinking of himself as something of a god on earth. This is seen in the sentence where he claims himself to not just be a general, but rather someone that decides the fates, as if he has such grand power to decide the fate of not just a single person, but rather of "peoples"
