Option B. To be the first person to reach the Spice Islands by sailing west from Europe. Magellan who became the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean set out from Spain in 1519 with a fleet of five ships consisting of 200 men to discover a western sea route to the Spice Islands. Magellan had the intention to command a voyage to the Spice Islands. He believed he could reach there by sailing west although he never had the intention to circumnavigate the earth then; he had only intended to find a secure route through which the Spanish ships could navigate to the Spice Islands. Then he and Elcano became the the first known humans to circumnavigate the Earth; they sailed from Seville, Spain in 1519 and returned in 1522, after crossing the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans and discovering discovering the Strait of Magellan.
