As president, McKinley led an open life. Throughout his presidency, McKinley quite closely contacted the public and the press. On September 6, 1901, an assassination attempt against William McKinley was committed in the concert hall at the Worldwide Pan American Exhibition in Buffalo. On the occasion of the exhibition, the president gave a big reception at the Temple of Music in Buffalo, and namely during this event he was assassinated. When the president greeted the public, anarchist Leon Czolgosz shot him with a pistol twice. McKinley was mortally wounded and passed away on September 14, 1901, becoming the third president of the United States killed during his presidency.
