The first is not true, as at least Ukraine and Belarus were not fully independent before the war.

They were also all not allies of the US in the cold war, but instead part of the opposing power.

They did not become communist voluntarily, but it was imposed on them by the Russians

The last answer is correct: they became independent after the fall of the Soviet Union.
