How did Southerners treat their slaves

Slaves were punished or treated poorly/badly. They were so mistreated that they would whip, shackle, beat, brand, and/or imprison them. Punishment was often done because of there disobedience or perceived infractions, and other times masters or overseers would abuse salves to assert dominance.
