At the end of the Spanish-American war in 1898, the Philipphines, together with Guam, were ceded by Spain to the US. The forces in Phillipines were fighting the Spanish rulers for their independence at that time, and at the arrival of the Americans their reaction was to fight them too.

In the decade of the 1930s the Philippines finally started its transition towards full independence.
