Emile Durkheim is credited as being a founder of modern studies in sociology. A French sociologist, Durkheim proposed theories relating to social sciences with regards to functionalism and the division of labor. Durkheim stated that everything in a society is functional, necessary and beneficial in minds of the members of the society, that parts of society will only be continuously used if they serve useful functions. Durkheim proposed that two parts of society exist; the traditional (focuses on hunting, gathering and group identity) and the more complex modern society (industrial, class levels existing with upper, middle, and lower).
