    What Henry Louis Gates meant when he stated that Gandhi was agitating for independence was that Gandhi was a revolutionary leader who was anti colonial and not only did he want the freedom and independence of India from the colonial masters, he also fought for it as well.

    Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi was an Hindu and Indian lawyer. He was also civil rights activist who was quite passionate about the liberation and independence of India.

    He started his role as a civil rights activist in South Africa where he stayed for some years and started his family. He later on moved to India were he was the leader of the Indian National Congress. He organised several non - violent protests aimed at the independence of India from the colonial masters, reduction in poverty and an increase in women rights.
