Mali was the largest of the West African trading empires, reaching its peak in the 1300s. It was during this time that it reached its fame and fortune. Mali’s kings had converted to Islam which gave them plenty of advantages of good will in diplomacy and commerce. Muslim Mandingo merchants were trading as far east as the city-states in Hausaland and beyond to Lake Chad in the 1300s. Their main source of wealth were the gold trade, as well as trade in food such as sorghum, millet and rice.
