The process of piecing together a clinical formulation lies at the very center of the practitioner's craft, bridging, as it does, the issues of assessment, etiology, and intervention which inform clinical work. The skills involved in specifying the nature of the presenting problem, formulating explanatory hypotheses, determining and evaluating a test of the formulation, and translating it into a treatment plan have their roots in psychological science and art.
