Was the Sahara desert in northern or southern Africa

The Sahara Desert still exists and it is located in Northern Africa in countries such as Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, Sudan, and others. Southern Africa has entirely different climate and does not contain a desert like the Sahara.
