If the late 1800s were a period of economic growth, why is it called the Gilded Age?

    The gilded age, or the golden age in the U. S was the start of many things. Vehicles were produced, electricity had become used often, economic boom, and quite a lot more.

    Gilded, a synonym is gold or plated thinly with gold. Therefore Golden age.
