In Canada, there are 3 main levels of government, from smallest to largest which are muncipal, provincial and federal. The municipal deals with matters relevant to the local towns and cities across the country such as transit, potable water, sewer, street maintenance and housing for example. The provincial deals mainly with health, mining and energy resources and policies, provincial sales tax and some income tax, treaty negotiations with the First Nations, forestry and agriculture. The federal government deals with foreign relations, defense (and war), federal pensions, and also overlaps with the provinces on agriculture and mining and energy policies, to name some of the things.

The three levels of government are local, state and federal. Local governments govern counties, cities and towns. State governments rule over states, and the federal government rules the country as a whole.
