Van Goh suffered from serious mental health problems. An early sign of this was a quarrel with his friend and fellow artist Paul Gauguin, during which he chased Guaguin and cut a part of his own left ear with a razor after having threatened him. This happened on Christmas Eve in 1888 (some historians say that it was Gauguain who wounded him with a sword). It is known that Van Goh had maniac depression just as many great artists do. He also suffered from a form of epilepsy. His life was short but highly productive, leaving us some of the greatest art works of the late 19th century.
