    It was open to fire from the opposing trenches soldiers were forced to cross no man's land when advancing and this could be because they were retreating, but after an attack the stretcher bearers had to enter it to bring in the wounded.

    No Man's Land contained a considerable amount of barbed wire and mines. In the areas most likely to be attacked, there were ten belts of barbed wire just before the front-line trenches. You were open to the other side and a walking target waiting to get shot at
