    The American Indians of the northwest coast host a ceremony named Potlatch to give away possessions to show off their wealth to the common people. The word comes from Chinook jargon which means to "give away" or a "gift". The potlatch was organised in case of birth, death, wedding etc.

    The northwest coast also has a system of house society, and the potlatch ceremony is also hoisted by a house. The house was generally headed by aristocrats but on some occasions common people and slaves also participated. The potlatch can be hosted only by the rich people, slaves were not allowed there. Sometimes, multiple potlatch ceremonies was also organised.
