    Flagellants were members of organization which practiced public whipping as a form of penanceFinally, the processions of flagellants were banned in 1349. By Pope Clement VI in the Bull "Inter sollicitudines" under threat of anathema. As a result, part of the flagellants surrendered to the authorities, and some "went underground" transformed into a heretical sect.
