The first permanent English settlement in the United States was located in Jamestown, Virginia.

    Explanation:

Jamestown was founded on May 14, 1607 by the Virginia Company on behalf of King James I, after whom the place is also named. It is also the first successful permanent English settlement in America. After several difficult years as a result of hunger, disease and a conflicting relationship with the Indians, the colony fared better from 1612. That year, settler John Rolfe introduced a certain tobacco plant, which turned out to be lucrative.

During the Bacon Rebellion in 1676, Jamestown was burned to the ground. The settlement was then rebuilt, but in 1698 the State House, the seat of the colonial government, was burned down again. This led to the relocation of the Virginia colony in 1699 from Jamestown to Williamsburg. Jamestown was abandoned and today only exists as an archaeological site.
