Have the courage to use your own understanding

be brave in thoughts and cognition, without creating authorities for yourself

    Explanation:

The first and key idea of the Enlightenment was the idea of the dominance of the human mind, or, more precisely, the dominance of the scientific mind over all other forms of the mind, as well as the belief in the limitless possibilities of this mind. In Kant, Enlightenment is understood in two ways. On the one hand, this is an ongoing socio-political process, on the other, it is the task, or duty, of each person as a representative of the public. Enlightenment is at the same time a process in which people are included collectively, and an act of courage carried out by everyone personally. According to Kant, the task is to free oneself from the intellectual (and, as a consequence, of the political) "guardianship." In a sense, Enlightenment is everyone's self-enlightenment.
