How many times does the Declaration of Independence refer to parliament?

    The word "Parliament" does not appear in the Declaration. There are some indirect references, but the focus of the Declaration is the King, not Parliament. Congress had been attempting to get the King to step in and broker a compromise with Parliament asserting certain powers over the colonies and the colonies rejecting Parliament's authority. It was the fact that the King announced his full support of Parliament and use of military force to crush colonial dissent that the Declaration addressed. Most members of Congress believed that Parliament never had any authority to intervene in the direct affairs of the colonies. There was no need to declare independence from that. Rather they were declaring independence from the King.
