Wovoka and his ghost dance became so popular among Indian tribes in the Southwest because they believed that the ceremony would reunite the spirits of the dead with those of the living, and the power of these spirits could be harnessed in battle with white settlers and the US Army.

Wovoka became so popular among Indian tribes in the southwest because he prophesied the reuniting of the remaining Indian tribes of the southwest and the west from the spirit of the dead through a ghost dance and most of all, the banishment of all evil from the world resulting to a bountiful land of love and peace.
