The Montgomery movement propelled Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. to the leadership of the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s. Just like apartheid in South Africa Racial segregation and oppression by Whites was rife in the US. The Civil Rights movement is about the frustration and clamouring by African Americans to demand their rights as citizens. Blacks never had the same rights White people had; they were discriminated against in a host of institutions and public amenitiesâ€"schools, hospitals rest rooms etc. The movement began when a black woman in Alabama called Rosa Parks who was arrested because she refused to give up her seat to a white man. There had been a law that forbids blacks from sitting at the front if there were no seats for whites. As a result, blacks no longer wanted started boycotting public buses. They chose a young minister, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to lead their greavaince and he was killed later on.
