Why did stephen austin advertise in southern newspapers to attract settlers to texas?

Stephen Austin advertised in newspapers in the American South as a means to attract settlers to Texas; he specifically did this, as opposed to Northern newspapers, because he felt that the inhabitants of the Southern US states would be much more familiar with the sort of climate that would also be found within Texas.
