    Simple answer A holocaust. The Nazi Germany one was much more broadly known because it was a war against its own citizens who by and large were peaceful and wished no conflict with anyone. One of the reasons Israel is so militant is that they don't want to see a holocaust happening again.

    Both happened because there was historical hatred present. Holocausts are always fueled by hatred.
