An exclusive economic zone is a zone that is usually an island. Exclusive means that even though it's an island that's far away, another country has exclusive economic rights to goods and commodities that can be found there like fish, or hunting, or even things like oil. They are important for Pacific island nations because they are mostly comprised of islands that are eez which means that they build their economies out of them.
