Targets of Joseph Stalin's The Great Purge were political enemies, government officials and military officials of the Red Army, the intellectuals and artists and the kulaks. All the original Bolsheviks who took part in the Revolution of 1917 were the first group of victims to fall in the purge. Some 1,500 intellectuals and artists died in prison and concentration camps. The kulaks were rich peasants before the Revolution. During the purge, they were accused of refusing to participate in collectivization. Many were sent to labor camps and executed.
