When imperialistic European powers came into China, they were far behind the now advanced European nations. Great Britain was able to negotiate ownership of Hong Kong and the United States was able to negotiate the Open Door Treaty. The Open Door Treaty allowed for the rest of China to remain sovereign and all other nations to create trade deals. The Chinese people resented the western influence leading to rebellions and riots against western culture, in particular the influence of Christianity. Eventually, this will lead to uprisings causing a change in Chinese government to a nationalist party. This party will ineffectively remove western influence and that will then spark the communist party to rise.
