The work of Greek philosophers was lost to Europeans for centuries. However, during the Middle Ages, there was a transmission of these classics to Western Europe, which greatly contributed to the development of intellectual life in the continent. This process consisted of several steps.

Many significant works from Classical Greece had been translated into Syriac, Arabic and Persian during the Middle Ages, and the original Greek texts were often lost. As the Arab caliphates absorbed this knowledge, the Arab world became the main intellectual centre of the Mediterranean region.

When the Crusades were initiated, there was significant Christian presence in the Arab World. This, along with the fall of the Byzantine Empire, caused significant movement in the region. Scholars who fled to Europe often brought their knowedge with them. The texts that arrived were translated into Latin by Christian priests, thus bringing the classical texts back to the Western canon.
