In 15th-century Europe, the dominant slave traders were Portuguese. However, this was countered a bit later on by French and English slave traders. The Portuguese had explored and established trading posts along the coasts of West Africa where they would trade weapons and commodities for slaves, which they would then drop off either in the Caribbean or in what would now be the United States.
