    Chinampas were an Aztec form of Agriculture which consisted of small, rectangular plantations.

    They can be described as artificial islands which were made in freshwater lakes. With canals forming around them and plantations on raised mud plots.

    The Aztecs were not the first to use the Chinampa system but were the first to adopt it on a massive scale and use it for wide-spread cultivation.

    They grew all sorts of 'New World' crops such as maize, chili peppers, beans and even flowers on them.
