Just six weeks after the Bastille assault, and just three weeks after the abolition of feudalism, a Declaration of Human and Citizen's Rights, that was adopted by the National Constituent Assembly as the first step in writing a constitution for the Republic of France.

    The Declaration proclaims that all citizens must be guaranteed the rights of "freedom, property, security, and resistance to oppression".
