The separation of powers or three branches of government was a key idea in Montesquieu work. The French philosopher created the idea that government should be branched in three separate instances in order to limit and control their power. The three branches are legislative, the power of creating law, executive, the power of executing law and judiciary, the power to make people respect the law.
