The Rural Electrification Act was enacted in 1936 in order to approve the provision of funds for the establishment of electrical systems in rural areas in the US. Electric power cooperatives were founded to channel the money from the loans and most of these companies still exist nowadays. It was part of Roosevelt's New Deal and constituted one the mechanisms for the generation of job positions, with the ultimate aim of reducing the large unemployment figures.
