    Samuel tilden urged them to go along with the decision of the electoral commission because Republican candidate Hayes had indicated his willingness to offer substantial patronage to the South.

    Giving patronage means that the south also will receive many economic privileges if Hayes is elected, which almost guarantee Hayes' victory in those states if the Democrats did not make any response.
