In 1776, the United States was comprised of the 13 colonies. By 1870, the U. S. had expanded beyond the Mississippi River to the states of Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas.

    1776-1870

First of all, one of the main changes to the United States of America during 1776-1870 was the population change. In 1776 around 2,000,000 were recorded living in the United States. By the end of 1870 nearly 40 million people were recorded living in the United states. Population change was most likely due to the fact of how fast America was reproducing since the troops of war had come home to visit their families. Other reasons could have contributed to the population growth but that was most likely the main one.

The second change in the United States of America during 1776 and 1870 was the right to vote was extended to all male citizens. The male citizens could be black or white. Women would not yet gain their right to vote until 1920.

An important event that happened in this time period is the Civil War which began in 1861 and lasted until 1865. The Civil War was fought for many reasons. It was fought for slavery and a redefining of citizenship. The 14th amendment was created from the Civil War and it stated that "any person born or naturalized in the United States of America" was a citizen. The other amendment that was created as a result of the Civil War was the 13th amendment which abolished slavery. One of the last amendments created from the Civil War was the 15th amendment which prohibited denying the right of someone to vote because of their race.
