People were treated badly.

People were held in cages, closets, and other inappropriate spaces.

The people with mental illnesses endured many pains and tragedies. Seems as though some were often even killed. If they would not behave, they would get slashed with ropes, chained with chains, and even be shoved in a closeted area with barely any air.
