In response to secession, Lincoln - who had not yet been inaugurated - stated all of the following except a. the Union would be preserved. b. by seceding Southerners forfeited all rights as American citizens and would not be allowed to return to the United States. c. all attempts would be made for reconciliation. d. the federal government would retain all property.

    It is extremely likely to be b because Lincoln never took a stance that extreme, not to mention that his attitude was of the weakest between his electoral victory and his inauguration: he only inserted a message through his close buddy, Trumbull's speech at Chicago, confirming "states' right to choose and employ their own means of property".
