    The Treaty of Versailles of 1919 included several, very serious limitations for Germany and huge financial reparations. One of them was the imposition of a demilitarized zone along the German-French border, the Rhineland. After the Nazis came to power, its leader Adolf Hitler started to unilaterally break the limitations of the treaty regarding the army, arm production and other clauses. In 1936, German troops entered the Rhineland, reoccupying it. Neither France nor Great Britain reacted.
