The Dred Scott case made it so that slavery would technically be legal anywhere in the Untied States.

In the case, Dred Scott vs. Sandford, Dred Scott (a slave) sued for his freedom. His argument was that his owner brought him into a territory where slavery was outlawed. In this case, Scott argued that this made him a free man. However, the Supreme Court ruled otherwise.

The Supreme Court justices ruled that slaves are not citizens and have no rights which slave owners are bound to respect. Essentially, slaves were property and could be brought anywhere but slave owners. This made it so that people could travel with their slaves to free states without worrying about them becoming free.
