Why did Spanish authorities close the port of New Orleans? Spain secretly allied with England to prepare for war with the United States. Spain wanted to prevent the Louisianna Purchase so they could keep the land. Spain was aware of the impending partnership of England and the United States and they needed to create a strategic buffer. Spain closed the port in anticipation of the French's arrival and to cut off American traffic from its markets.
