    The Republican candidate Herbert Hoover, who was associated in the public opinion with the economic boom of the 1920s, won a victory, while Alfred Smith, a Democratic candidate and a Catholic, faced anti-Catholic sentiments, opposed prohibition, and also the corruption scandals of Tammany Hall. During the debate, much attention was devoted to the prohibition issue in comparison with all other aspects.
