After war began in Europe, Roosevelt followed an interventionist policy. For example, during his presidency the War Production Board was created to regulate the production and distribution of materials and fuel during the Second World War in the United States.

The War Production Board was established as a government agency on January 16, 1942 by executive order of Franklin D. Roosevelt. It converted and extended peacetime industries to meet the needs of war, allocating scarce materials vital to the production of war, establishing priorities in the distribution of materials and services, and prohibited production that was not essential. Things like gasoline, fuel for heating, metals, rubber, paper and plastics were rationed. It was dissolved shortly after the defeat of Japan in 1945, and was replaced by the civilian production of the Administration at the end of 1945.
