The fiefs or lands were confiscated from the previous owners by William the conqueror and given to the people who fought for him, became known as Manors. The lord of the manor owed his loyalty to the king. The lord of the manor was known as a Vassal or a Liege. The fiefs were lands owned by someone who was loyal to a lord. and vassals were lands owned by a lord and directly subservient to the king.
