The Byzantines and Islamic development became different from Western Europe, although they all were the successors of the Roman Empire, "Byzantines" in the Eastern Roman Empire existed for a thousand years after the Western Empire fell and, Islamic civilization extended across northern Africa through Mesopotamia and into Central Asia.

The language became a difference too, as Latin was the language of the Western Empire and, Greek was the Eastern Empire official language, which was the most widely spoken language.

The split between Western and Eastern Empires, evidenced that the East had larger population with a stronger economy within the, once Alexander the Great's hellenistic universe during the fourth century BCE, and his successors' territories, now mostly inhabited by Greeks in a town which Constantine the Great rebuilt as Constantinople. They continue their government without any ethnic rebellion to establish their own state, as they called themselves Romans and many Roman legal practices featured the East as a civilization, as a unified state, while western Europe in the same period was not, being multiple nations, fighting against each other, although politically, both cultures were theocratic and authoritarian, western Europe had dozens of political systems ruled by powerful monarchs vested with political, military, and religious authority.
