The most well-known were Hernán Cortés and Francisco de Ulloa

    Explanation:

The first explorations to South America started by European explorers were around the early 16th century. Their main interest was to reach Mexico and Perú, though they sailed in California after their exploration.

Hernán Cortés was in search of the city of La Paz, Perú, but did not find it at first. So in 1535 he claimed Santa Cruz Island, which is now known as Baja California. Thereafter, Cortés sent Francisco de Ulloa to explore further and that was the time, around 1539, when he sailed up to Cedros Island.

After that, a legion of other explorers such as Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, Sir Francis Drake and Sebastián Vizcaíno followed for the next 70 years.
